damage assessments
The Intentional or inadvertent compromise of classified or sensitive national security information can have far-reaching effects on US Government policies and programs, potentially jeopardizing our national security, our military operations, and the lives of our citizens.
The Damage Assessment Section executes the NCIX’s responsibility to lead the Intelligence Community in examining, through disciplined analytical tradecraft, the aggregate damage to US national security from the compromise of national security information. Responsibility for national assessments was assigned to ONCIX by the Counterintelligence Enhancement Act of 2002 and reaffirmed by the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004. Such assessments result in recommendations to guide corrective actions and policies.
The sections mission includes: producing timely and objective analytical products of the damage caused by specific events; discovering potential systemic weaknesses in CI practice and providing recommendations to address those areas; and ensuring that assessment findings and lessons learned are widely shared throughout the community, contributing to broader strategic understanding.
